Which instruments select overtones with the throat — and which only appear to. Physics and teaching practice kept strictly apart, because confusing them is how players end up drilling an exercise their instrument cannot use.
Saxophone and flute have very strong documented traditions. Clarinet has a strong one, framed specifically as voicing. Oboe and bassoon have a narrower form, centred on tone centre and alternate fingerings. Brass practises partials constantly — but by a different mechanism. Strings and keyboards do not use this technique at all.

No — and this is the correction that matters most. Brass players select partials with the lips and the airstream. Measured acoustic work on trumpet found no systematic tuning of vocal-tract resonances, in explicit contrast to saxophonists, who can only reach their top range by tuning the tract.
This is not a small distinction. Brass overtone practice is arguably more central to brass than overtone work is to saxophone — every note a brass player produces is a selected partial of one of seven harmonic series, and moving between partials is a named, daily, method-book discipline. But a saxophonist's instruction — hold the embouchure still, move the back of the tongue — describes the wrong organ for a trumpeter.
Give brass players their own words: firming the lips and speeding the air lifts you to the next partial; relaxing both drops you back. The valve combination or slide position does not move. Vowel shape can support the slur — many players feel "oh" moving toward "ee" going up — but it does not select the note the way it does on saxophone.
Because overtones exist everywhere as physics, and that fact proves nothing about how anyone practises. Every vibrating air column and every string produces a harmonic series. Whether players deliberately select partials — and by what mechanism — is an entirely separate question, and it is the only one that decides whether an exercise transfers.
Throughout this reference, Physics marks acoustics and Pedagogy marks documented teaching practice. They are not interchangeable. Physics is never used here as evidence for pedagogy. Where only physics is available, that is said plainly.
A string harmonic is produced by lightly touching a node — with a finger, or a knuckle or palm on the harp — to damp the fundamental, while a bow or a pluck excites the string. There is no air column, no oral cavity, no breath. A throat-based exercise does not transfer to strings partly. It does not transfer at all.
Imagine singing "ee" and sliding your voice from a low note to a high one. That is the sensation. Posture, hands, jaw and teeth stay still and relaxed; only the back of the tongue moves, arching further up and back for the higher note. Crucially, you arrive at the shape before you play, not after.
Finger the middle note, close every key, and arch the tongue until a high, thin overtone rings over it — that is the shape to lock. Keep that same shape and switch the fingers down to the low note; it should jump up to the same overtone. Four times on each, quietly. Practising very softly lets you continue far longer without tiring.
